Shapes & Variations | Gail Salzman

June 3rd – July 10th

Reception Thursday, June 3rd, 5-7pm

We are pleased to present an exhibition of Vermont artist Gail Salzman’s new series ‘Shapes & Variations’ opening June 3rd. The works are gouache paint on paper representing abstract images that reference the natural world.

This is Salzman’s first series working with gouache and she is as adept at employing it as with her more frequently exhibited oil paintings and monotypes. The common theme has a sense of both staccato and fluidity in the contours and colors that create movement within the compelling, natural formations. Salzman annually spends part of summer painting in mid-coastal Maine, a place that renews her fascination with patterns and flotsam she calls ‘tidal gifts’.

“As I enhance some shapes and obscure others, a dynamic tension develops. Shapes meet, interact, and collide in a dance that takes on personal significance. During the past pandemic year, these ‘relationships’ created a world of escape, hope, and pleasure.”

We invite the public to a reception with the artist on Thursday, June 3rd, from 5 to 7 pm. Refreshment and socializing will take place outdoors; masks are required inside the gallery.
