Nancy Diefenbach

I bring a lifetime of engagement with art to my work in marble. By combining abstraction with figurative carving I often express in gesture a human experience, a personal relationship, or my reaction to the natural world. It is fascinating to me the way the stone responds to the chisels, the way the tools can create texture and contrasts, and the way the marble can be finished to take on a life of its own.

I have concentrated on exploring the possibilities of sculpture in marble since first studying stone-carving at The Carving Studio & Sculpture Center in West Rutland, VT. Taking workshops with various teachers has helped develop my technical skills. Now I continue to gather inspiration and motivation by returning to the quarries to carve with fellow alumni.

However, my career in art began at Moore College of Art & Design in Philadelphia, PA, with a BFA in Fashion Design. Later, sharing my love of art with children led to acquiring an MA in Education – Gifted & Talented. Teaching art at the middle school level for many years was an educational and stimulating experience in itself. Currently I am working as a full-time artist in my studio in Danville, VT. My Environment today is the peace and quiet of woods and mountains.

My public commission works are found in Springfield and Danville, VT. The Springfield work consists of 6 relief-carved panels installed at the Vermont State Office Building under the auspices of the Art-in-State-Buildings program. The carvings in Danville are part of a highway, artistic enhancement program sponsored by the Vermont Arts Council and the VT Agency of Transportation. These several outdoor pieces celebrate the town of Danville, its surroundings, and its people.
