Artist Statement

My inspiration for this body of work occurred when I read a statement by Fernande Leger whose work I greatly admire.

“I selected an object and got rid of the table. I put the object in space, minus perspective, minus anything to hold it there.”

My “works on paper” resemble a complex arrangement of overlapping objects defining and merging into the space.

This resonated with me, as I wanted to work with certain meaningful still life objects and yet portray them in a deconstructed space. For years I have been drawn to the Puritan imagery such as urns and hourglasses. These objects describe life and death and allowed me to speak about the transience of life.

Buddhism teaches us that all shapes and forms are impermanent; they come and go. Truly realizing this phenomenon also involves understanding that nothing in awareness is lost.
