We are pleased to have the opportunity to exhibit this inspiring, oil painting by the artist Janet McKenzie. ‘A Brave and Quiet Heart’ is a gentle figure with open hands, intently looking ahead, bearing pride colors, and balanced with doves on each side. This June 12th, 2020, marks four years since the Orlando Pulse Nightclub tragedy. McKenzie excels at capturing a powerful visage, which while at rest, offers both strength and solace. We invite you to come visit the gallery this month and take in the details of her work in person. Read McKenzie’s statement below. As an artist I have a responsibility to be a voice for change, even hope. I have no interest in making art that is… |

As always, there are various suitable options when considering a frame design. Here’s a look at how we progressed to make a home for this antique print of a Blue Heron. We’ve been framing some beautiful prints and maps with moulding we keep in stock. Also it’s been wonderful to continue curbside (actually porchside, for us) service with some of you wonderful clients who are taking the opportunity to spruce up your home while you are spending so much extra time in it! Thank you to everyone for being compliant and safe. We hope to see you soon with new framing projects! We’ll keep you informed of our safety protocol and upcoming exhibits. |

A Note from Lara: The operations of our gallery and frameshop are currently limited. However, Nico & I continue to finish previous orders and create new framed shop prints from material and art already on hand. We had previously ordered new porcelain earrings and beautiful tabletop photoframes which we have already displayed so there will be fresh looks to discover when we open up again! The depth of the human world’s current crisis is felt upfront and strongly. I personally have felt consolation, peace, and encouragement from the artwork our gallery currently contains. A landscape snapshot. A dance of brushwork. Woven serenity. A still visage. Art is the work of spirit- in support, in question, and interpretation. For me, it… |

Hello dear customers, artists, & friends, Today at FSGallery we are truly feeling for our Vermont community and the world at large.Though we are a small business that can control social distance, we have all been informed about best procedure for prevention. So for everyone’s safety we have closed doors physically. However, we have work to complete and new projects we can begin with materials on hand. Thus, we will be in the shop doing our best to consider our future together. Please let us know if you have a project or an art desire. We can proceed with custom framing via email or phone. This is a service we have always offered as it works well for our clients… |

-a brief note from Lara I’ve been wanting to make a statement about how happy I am to carry on the business that Joan & Brad built up and refined since the year they bought Shelburne Frame & Art in 1991. Their fine eye for detail, color, and quality finishes- plus a developed and informed perception for fine art- shows in all aspects of FSGallery. I’ve learned a ton from Joan and Brad and from customer service and relationships with our wonderful artists & clients. I am proud to be able to continue with this work- which brings me satisfaction and connection in a meaningful way. Many clients and artists have shown their support and positivity for this transition— You… |

We are pleased to be showing new glass pieces by Leon Applebaum of Sahaj Glass. Applebaum worked with glass makers in Sweden and applies his gained knowledge to create his own approach and style. He employs both hot-sculpting and cold working methods with vibrant and bold outcomes. “The process of blowing glass has been my teacher for the past 35 years. I have developed glass blowing techniques for my work that captivate the fluid energy of hot glass, using fire, air centrifugal force, gravity, and tools to push and pull the glass. I enjoy exploring the visual dimensions of massive glass and reflective interiors, using transparent colors so that light passes through and brings out the pure beauty and essence… |

The gallery has recently welcomed the work of Anne Thiam, a Massachusetts artist whose porcelain ceramics are elegant whilst mysterious interpretations of naturally found shapes brought forth with a personal vision. “I mainly work in porcelain using soft slab to integrate textures and patterns into my pieces with hand made stamps and rollers. My forms take root in the natural world. I have been greatly influenced by textiles and architecture from around the world. The intent of each sculpture is to excite the viewer, drawing them into a new world that merges the real with the imagined.” … |

This collection of silhouette note-cards came together quite well as a group by adding a marbled paper to encompass them all and a golden fillet to add a highlight and also correspond with the fine details of the cut paper. The burl wood frame lent itself to the overall style our client was looking for to fit the feel of her home. One of the note-cards was a little different (by the artist at a different time period) and had a marbled paper border that we were lucky to match from our own selection. Here’s a little peek at parts of the hand-done process: |

Not your usual work of art— We’re showcasing an amazing handmade bass by Brad Sourdiffe. It is unique in every way and it sounds so good he doesn’t really want to let it go. After antique frame restoration, hand finishing frames, and practicing music, Brad has been finding time to apply all those skills to building bass guitars. Come see this magnificent piece in the gallery. -locally sourced flamed maple top -old stock mahogany (about 70 years old) -hard maple and rosewood neck -birch burl veneer on headstock, pickup rings & bridge accent (I found this burl while cutting firewood) -chambered light weight body -Schaller bridge, Wilkinson tuners -EMG 35TWX pickups, switchable between single & dual coil for a wide… |

Back in February, Joan and I went down to Philadelphia to scout for new artisans of jewelry and crafts to freshen up our offerings. We met lovely people and discovered nice jewelry styles to provide more options for you. Now, the orders are arriving just in time for the spring seasonal change. Sometimes you just need something new! Though our main event was the American Craft Retailers Expo, we also found time to enjoy the amazing South Street mosaics of Isaiah Zagar. Zagar has created a multitude of murals starting in his own lot and moving on to fences, neighboring building walls, streets, and abandoned lots. He uses all sorts of odds and ends such as… |

Woods Edge Artist Talk: Joseph Salerno on the development and process of creating an oil series During a 2 1/2 year period, Joseph Salerno made daily visits to a small stretch of woods near his home in Johnson. He created numerous, exquisite 6″ x 9″ oil paintings on paper depicting the woods throughout the seasons using an intimate, abstract approach that reflects his personal practice of painting: “Part observation, part invention, part memory, this work has grown out of my life long practice of working directly from nature.” Salerno, a Johnson State college art professor, just received the prestigious Avigdor Arikha Memorial International residency scholarship, an annual award providing a 2 week residence in Civita, Italy. Salerno was chosen from… |

When framing objects we often rely on trilene fishing line to invisibly (and reversibly) mount objects to their backing within a wall hanging frame. This project came full circle when it was an actual fishing fly that we employed the fishing line to support. This signature R. Frost lure looks great in its new home and is even surrounded by a decorative fillet inside the mat. (fillet!) |

We had a great time attending our first Pechakucha night held at the Shelburne Museum shelburnemuseum.org on Thursday 11/12/15. Most of the 8 presenters were represented in the current exhibit , “Eyes on the Land”, a collaboration between the Vermont Land Trust, the Shelburne Museum , owners of conserved land, and the visual artists. Each person or group spoke about their work using 20 slides that were each viewed for 20 seconds. Very fast paced and to the point! “Eyes on the Land” was conceived as a way for 13 artists to develop individual relationships with a piece of conserved land over the course of a year and show their reaction to the 15 sites through their personal artistic mediums…. |

Here we reveal the skillful steps that underlie the magic of restoration. Brad Sourdiffe is our master of frame conservation (and new, hand finished mouldings). He uses the same methods that the original frame creators used to craft beautiful, gilt frames. He can stabilize and renew damage that might look severely beyond repair. |
