Dan Fisher's landscapes are fluid, expansive and rely hugely on the immediacy of their on-site creation. They comprise a rigorous blend of illusion, abstraction and geometry and yet no one element appears to dominate the picture plane. He walks or bicycles down Vermont's country roads in all kinds of weather, pulling behind him the gypsy-wagon palette table he designed and built. Painting in oils since he was ten, his work has been exhibited in North Carolina, Los Angeles and Boston. Last summer he received the top prize for a two-dimensional work at Vermont's Stratton Arts Festival. "When my wife and I moved to Vermont four years ago after seven years in Los Angeles, most people asked us, "Are you nuts?" Not quite. We were married in Burlington and Wendy was raised in the Berkshires while I spent my childhood in rural Appalachia. Although New York City was where we met and our first home, a love of nature and rural living has been a common bond. The vitality and energy of the city has always been a lure, but hearing the voice of nat ure is how one gets clear. I walk/pedal out with my palette table and I am met by dreams I have had returning to me in the flesh. At such points I feel lucky beyond measure. The knowledge of how to paint them is not in my head but in my hand. I have to paint by feel and sound, as if I was blind. It is amazing how much the gift of sight controls, edits and ultimately obscures our experience. I would like my work to be a map back to the remarkable things we leave behind."
